One third of spending on European original content is made by global streamers
 11 Sep 2025
The brand-new report: "Audiovisual services spending on original European content 2014-2024 data“ has just been published by the European Audiovisual Observatory, part of the Council of Europe in Strasbourg. This report provides an overview of production investment by broadcasters and streamers in original European content. The basis is data from Ampère Analysis.

Key findings

Total spending on European original works (excluding news and sports rights) amounted to EUR 25.1 billion in 2024, with two-thirds coming from the broadcasters and one-third from global streamers. For the purpose of this report, Europe refers to the EU27 countries, as well as Albania, Armenia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Iceland, Montenegro, North Macedonia, the Republic of Moldova, Norway, Serbia, Switzerland, Türkiye, the United Kingdom and Ukraine.

Whereas global investments in content by major streaming services are plateauing, the proportion of investment dedicated to European content is increasing at the expense of US content. Disney+ in particular has considerably increased its investment in European original content.

The relative importance of broadcasters and global streamers varies considerably between countries. In France, the Netherlands, Germany and Poland, broadcasters play a more important role in the production of European original content than in Spain, Norway and Italy where global streamers account for nearly 50% or more of total spending.

Global streamers’ spending is indeed quite concentrated, geographically speaking. The UK and Spain together accounted for 58% of global streamer spending on European original content.
